Formula
How the calculator works
The calculator starts with your bill subtotal. Then it adds sales tax, tip, and any rounding you choose. If you split the check, it divides the final total by the number of people.
Tax = bill subtotal × tax rate
Tip = tip basis × tip percentage
Total = bill subtotal + tax + tip
Each person pays = total ÷ number of people
Example
$50 bill, 8% tax, 20% tip
For a $50 restaurant bill with 8% sales tax and a 20% pre-tax tip:
Tax: $50 × 8% = $4.00
Tip: $50 × 20% = $10.00
Total: $50 + $4 + $10 = $64.00
Split between 2 people: $32.00 each
Real receipt situations
When this calculator is useful
Use it when a receipt includes sales tax, a suggested tip, a group split, or a total that you want to check before paying.
Restaurant checks
Estimate a 15%, 18%, 20%, 22%, or 25% restaurant tip and see the full bill after tax.
Group meals
Split dinner, lunch, coffee, or a bar tab by the number of people at the table.
Receipt checks
Compare a pre-tax tip and an after-tax tip when a payment screen shows suggested gratuity.
Should you tip before or after tax?
Most people calculate a restaurant tip before tax because sales tax is not part of the service price. Tipping after tax is simpler and gives a slightly larger tip. USTipCalc lets you compare both methods.
Common mistakes to avoid
Forgetting to include sales tax when splitting the bill.
Tipping on tax when you meant to tip before tax.
Missing an automatic gratuity or service charge on the receipt.
Using a state tax estimate when your receipt shows a different local rate.
Tip calculator FAQs
How do I calculate a tip?
Multiply the tip basis by the tip percentage. For example, a 20% tip on a $50 bill is $10.
Should I tip before or after tax?
Most people calculate a restaurant tip before tax because sales tax is not part of the service price. Tipping after tax is simpler and slightly more generous.
How do I split a bill with tax and tip?
Add the bill subtotal, tax, tip, and any rounding. Then divide the total by the number of people splitting the check.
Can I use a flat tip amount instead of a percentage?
Yes. Enter a flat tip amount if you want to leave a specific dollar amount instead of using the percentage field.
Is this calculator exact for sales tax?
It is a quick estimate. Sales tax can vary by state, county, and city or town. In some locations, a transit authority or special-purpose tax district also affects the rate. The restaurant location and type of purchase can matter too. For the closest estimate, use the tax rate shown on your receipt.
